Merry Christmas

It was a great year of baseball in Washington, as we saw the Nationals win 96 games en route to capturing the National League East title.  We observed the emergence of a star in Anthony Rendon and prospects like Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Michael Taylor blossom in the minor leagues.

Thank you to everyone who read and commented this year.  I look forward to more passionate baseball talk in 2015.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Quoting The Godfather – Jim Callis on Joe Ross and Trea Turner

Before I began spiking the eggnog and focusing my attention away from the Hot Stove and onto the Yule Log, I was fortunate to receive an early Christmas present from Kris KringleSanta brought me a wonderful gift this year, scouting reports on new Nationals prospects Joe Ross and Trea Turner, from the one and only Jim Callis.  These were his thoughts on the recent blockbuster, from Washington’s perspective.

“I really liked this trade for the Nationals. Legitimate everyday shortstops are hard to find, and they got one in Trea Turner. His speed is obviously his standout tool, but if he manages his approach, he could hit for average with a little bit of pop. I don’t see him as a Gold Glover, but he has the tools to stay at shortstop.”

“Joe Ross is kind of like a lottery ticket. He has a great arm, capable of throwing mid-90s fastballs and power sliders, and he’s still figuring out how to dominate with it. He has some control but needs more command. If he figures it out, he could hit his ceiling and become a No. 2 or 3 starter. If not, he could be a late-inning bullpen weapon.” -> Jim Callis, MLBPipeline.com

THE NatsGM Show Episode #20 – Guest Nationals Legend Chad Cordero

To commemorate Episode #20 of THE NatsGM Show, I was fortunate to have former Washington Nationals closer, “The Chief”, Chad Cordero as my special guest.

Scouting Notes on Trea Turner from Baseball Prospectus’s Tucker Blair

Wednesday afternoon the Washington Nationals made a rare “prospects for prospects” trade with Tampa Bay, swapping OF Steven Souza and LHP Travis Ott for RHP Joe Ross and SS Trea Turner. As has become customary after new prospects arrive in Washington, I reached out to some of the top prospect evaluators on the web to receive some exclusive scouting reports for NatsGM.

Last Friday famous baseball hitting guru Ryan Parker from Baseball Prospectus analyzed Trea Turner’s swing and offered us some insights into the adjustments he is making in pro ball. Today former guest on Episode #10 of THE NatsGM Show and one of the sharpest talent evaluators I know, Tucker Blair, also shares his thoughts on new Nationals’ prospect Trea Turner.

“I saw Turner at NC State in early April and the AFL in late October. There is a lot to like, as he is a highly athletic player that has potential to stick at a position up the middle. Personally, I think his athleticism and range keep him as a SS moving forward. However, some concerns with the fringe-average arm and the choppy footwork give pause to some scouts in regards to his future at SS. I’m not terribly worried about it, and think the tools are above average and will only further develop with consistent coaching and repetition in pro ball. His actions were smooth in the AFL. It’s not a player that is learning to control his athleticism or simply does not have efficient tools, but a player that needs to allow the tools to marinate longer.

Regardless, you are looking at a player with plus value defensively, which is paired with his near elite speed. At the plate, Turner does have a mildly long swing and displays a small hitch at times. This was heightened some in my AFL viewing, but it’s important to remember that he played a very long season and could have certainly been drained by October. The bat has a chance to be average or a tick above average at the highest level, but it’s clearly the one area that scouts vary the most on. I’ve talked to some in the industry that think Turner is a first division player, and some think he’s a utility guy. I think he can provide enough value as a second division player even if the bat does not hit his ceiling.” -> Tucker Blair, Baseball Prospectus
