Scouting the MLB Draft – Spotlighting the Top Arms

th

With the 2016 MLB Draft now only 2 days away, NatsGM begins our Draft Week coverage by highlighting several of the top pitchers available in this year’s crop.  Currently the depth of this class is the college pitching outside the top-20 picks and the abundance of high school arms.  While I cannot mention every top name, these are several players who should be selected early in Round 1 Thursday night.

A.J. Puk                                LHP University of Florida

A massively built 6-7 230lbs lefty, A.J. Puk has been on scout’s radar since high school, but he spurned a likely early round selection to attend Florida.  Puk owns a strong 3-pitch repertoire, including a 94-98mph fastball with life, a hard upper-80s slider with tilt and a mid-80s changeup.  His motion is not the cleanest and he has a peculiar arm swing during his delivery, which creates Puk’s biggest weakness, his command and control of the strike zone.  These criticisms aside, when Puk is on, he has a flawless pitcher’s frame and the potential for 2 plus-plus pitches, making him the top prospect in this draft class.  Puk will go inside the top-5 picks and could go 1st overall.

For more information, please read my recent column on Puk -> http://natsgm.com/2016/05/16/armchair-evaluation-university-of-florida-lhp-a-j-puk/

Jason Groome                   LHP  New Jersey HS

Perhaps the top high school prospect in the 2016 class, Groome immediately catches the eye with his tall frame, long legs and projectable body. Standing 6-6 180lbs Groome has an easy, repeatable delivery with a natural rhythm throughout and gets quality extension toward home. Groome also impresses with how effortless he achieves his velocity, sitting 92-95mph with strong command of his fastball and showing off a sweeping 73-75mph curveball. In addition Groome also throws a mid-70s changeup with outstanding deception, replicating his fastball arm speed perfectly.

There have been questions about Groome’s maturity this spring, perhaps the only negative in his profile.  Groome possesses everything one would seek in a top high school pitching prospect and should not escape the first ten picks.

Riley Pint                             RHP  Kansas HS

Possessing a projectable, dreamy 6-4 192lbs frame, Riley Pint looks the part of an Ace when he toes the rubber.  First and foremost Pint is known for his exceptional velocity, sitting upper-90s and often hitting triple digits with some arm-side movement.  In addition to the fastball, Pint shows both a slider and a curveball, along with a potentially plus upper-80s changeup.  Like most high school pitchers, his motion needs refining, but Pint has electric top-of-the-rotation stuff that cannot be taught and should be drafted inside the top-10 picks.

Dakota Hudson                 RHP  Mississippi State University

After an impressive performance last summer on Cape Cod, Hudson has continued to build off that success this season for the Bulldogs.  Listed at 6-5 225lbs, Hudson possesses an ideal pitcher’s frame, along with a strong 4-pitch arsenal.  Hudson’s fastball sits 93-97mph with electric life, a nasty upper-80s cutter, a quality curveball and a changeup.  His command is below to fringe-average currently, the biggest knock in his profile.  However, his cutter might be the best pitch in this draft class, and as likely the 2nd best college pitcher available, he should go inside the top-15 picks.

Jordan Sheffield                RHP  Vanderbilt University

Another in the long line of Vanderbilt starting pitchers, Sheffield has long been known to scouts, as he was a potential 1st round pick in high school.  Sheffield possesses a lightning-quick arm, which produces a mid-90s fastball, a hard-breaking curveball and an impressive changeup. Sheffield does have warts, as physically he is a smallish 6-0 180lbs with a previous Tommy John surgery on his resume, and he struggles to command the strike zone.  However, the athleticism and excellent arm speed are easily evident, plus his potential for three above-average to plus pitches.  Sheffield should continue the Commodores streak of 1st round starting pitchers, going off the board quickly outside the top-10.

Zack Burdi                           RHP  University of Louisville

Burdi served as the closer for Louisville this season, dominating the competition with his 100+ mph fastball and powerful high-80s slider.  Furthermore Burdi shows a quality changeup and his motion does not scream “reliever”, leading teams to wonder if he can be developed as starter as a professional.  The team that believes in him as a starter will likely draft him around #15-#30, with a backup plan being a future as a late-inning reliever.

Eric Lauer                             LHP  Kent State University

One of the top pitchers on Cape Cod last summer, Lauer is a polished lefty with a quality 4-pitch repertoire, including a low-90s fastball, an average or above-average curveball and slider, plus a fringe-average changeup.  His physical build portends a durable workhorse capable of pitching 180+ innings per year and his simple, repeatable motion should allow him to pound the strike zone. The lack of elite velocity or plus off-speed pitch likely limits his ceiling, but Lauer projects as a solid #3 or #4 starter.

Armchair Evaluation – University of Florida LHP A.J. Puk

IMG_1528

Saturday afternoon I took advantage of the rainy weather outside to watch the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores play the host University of Florida Gators.  Considering the 2016 MLB Draft is less than a month away, I wanted to seize this opportunity to watch two top-10 teams loaded with potential early round draft prospects.  In particular, I wanted to perform an Armchair Evaluation of Florida’s Saturday starter, and projected top draft choice, LHP A.J. Puk.

Facing a difficult and talented Vanderbilt lineup, Puk pitched 6 impressive innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 2 walks against 11 strikeouts.  Puk threw 110 pitches against the 23 batters he faced, (64 strikes / 46 balls), inducing 3 ground outs and 4 fly outs.  Essentially Puk made one mistake, allowing only a solo home run in the 2nd inning to talented freshman Julian Infante.

The monstrous 6-7 230lbs. Puk utilizes a semi-windup, with a simple side step that leads into his high leg kick and delivery toward home.  Puk throws from a three-quarter to high three-quarter arm slot and has a noticeably fast arm.  His immense size, along with a reasonable amount of excess movement in his motion, causes him to struggle repeating his delivery.  Puk has a lengthy arm stroke with a mild arm-wrap, which further limits his ability to command the strike zone.

This outing gave a terrific synopsis of Puk as a prospect, as his strengths and weaknesses were fully exposed by Vanderbilt.  The “starter kit” with Puk is quite impressive as a lefty with legitimate mid-to-high 90s velocity, a mountainous frame ideal for a starting pitcher and the potential for two plus or better pitches.  Unfortunately his size works against him a bit, as he presently struggles to repeat his motion and arm slot.  In addition, his lack of confidence and the development of his changeup could hinder his ability to get professional right-handed hitters out.  However, his mechanical issues and changeup both should improve with professional coaching and repetitions.

His present velocity, frame and potential for two dominant pitches give him a floor of an impact late-inning reliever.  If he can improve his command of the strike zone and his changeup, the ceiling exists for Puk to develop into a #2 or #3 starter in the major leagues.  Puk should be an easy top-15 pick in next month’s draft, with a chance he goes inside the top-3.

Scouting A Baseball Stadium – Wrigley Field

IMG_5010

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to travel to Chicago to attend the Saturday and Sunday games at Wrigley Field between the surging Chicago Cubs and the 1st place Washington Nationals.  In addition to seeing Jake Arrieta verses Bryce Harper in-person, it was my first trip ever to visit the hallowed grounds of Wrigley Field.

In the midst of knocking this off my baseball “bucket list”, I decided to revisit a recurring column on this site, Scouting A Baseball Stadium.  Rather than using the traditional five scouting tools, I have broken down evaluating a stadium into five categories, namely Accessibility, Aesthetics, Affordability, Concessions and Fan Experience.

IMG_4977

Accessibility                       3 Out Of 4 Radar Guns

This is the biggest weakness of Wrigley Field, as its location within a neighborhood gives it less parking than the new stadiums built in the past generation.  That said, the train stops right at the park and there are dozens of individuals offering parking in nearby businesses or private residences.  Additionally, most fans seemed to arrive hours before the game to enjoy the festivities around the park, helping the potential congestion issues as well.

IMG_5028

Aesthetics                           3.75 Out Of 4 Radar Guns

There is a scene in the movie Rudy, when the father first sees Notre Dame’s football stadium and says “This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen” – I must admit to immediately thinking of this quote when I arrived at my seat and looked at the picturesque setting in front of me.

Wrigley’s location inside a neighborhood affords a nostalgic charm and the stadium has seen renovations in recent years giving it the look of an old park without the negatives of an old park.  The ivy on the outfield walls is unique and beautiful, the scoreboards are excellent, plus the views are generally unimpeded and spectacular.  Bottom line, this is the most beautiful professional stadium I have attended.

Affordability                     3.25 Out Of 4 Radar Guns

Chicago is a pricey city and the success of the Cubs has made tickets more popular than in previous seasons, but Wrigley Field seems to charge normal “big-league” prices for their tickets and concessions.  I went on Stubhub and bought tickets behind the plate for slightly above face value, a fair price for good seats to a weekend game.  There were plenty of people selling tickets outside the park and the number of rooftop bleachers outside Wrigley allows for a healthy supply of available seating.

The beer and food prices seemed slightly higher than other major league stadiums I have attended in recent years, although they give you impressive portions for your money.  While not a strength of Wrigley, I felt the prices were reasonable all things considered.

Concessions                       3.5 Out Of 4 Radar Guns

In terms of beer, one better be a big fan of Anheuser-Busch products Budweiser, Bud Light and Goose Island (a local former microbrew), as vendors are loaded with only these three choices.  According to Cubs regulars, there are quality craft beer options available, but one must specifically seek them out.  That said the number of vendors, beer and otherwise, in the stands was impressive and made it that fans never needed to leave their seat during the game.  The recent renovations made the concourses easy to walk and there are plenty of concession stands throughout the stadium.  The food options were a bit pricey and I did not notice a great deal of “novelty foods” popular at many stadiums, but this is nit-picking an otherwise solid effort by the Cubs’ organization.

IMG_5035

Fan Experience                 4 Out Of 4 Radar Guns

This is easily the strength of Wrigley Field, as the atmosphere is the most fun I have ever experienced for a regular season game.  From the number of bars and restaurants surrounding the stadium allowing the fans to properly “tailgate”, to the history of a stadium 100 years old, plus the tradition of singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” at the 7th inning stretch, attending a game at Wrigley Field is something to treasure.

Overall                               17.5 Out Of 20 Radar Guns  ->    A

I come away from my trip to with nothing but positive things to say after watching a weekend of baseball at Wrigley Field.  It has the charm of an old park, yet the amenities of most modern major league stadiums.  The fans are knowledgeable and generally know they are spending the day at a truly special place.  Wrigley is easily my favorite major league stadium I have ever attended and I cannot recommend strongly enough every baseball fan make at least one trip to these hallowed grounds.

Scouting Washington Nationals Prospect Austen Williams

IMG_4817

As previously mentioned in Tuesday’s column, last Saturday night I travelled to Bowie to watch the Baysox host the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A team for the Washington Nationals.  While I am always eager to watch a minor league game with postgame fireworks, I was particularly excited to see Nationals’ prospect Austen Williams face the experience Baysox lineup.  Below are my notes on Williams, plus two future Washington Nationals.

Austen Williams       RHP        Harrisburg Senators

Drafted by the Nationals in the 6th round in 2014 from Texas State, the 23-year-old Williams is a well-built 6-3 220lbs with broad shoulders and a frame built to throw 200+ innings per year.  Mechanically Williams throws from a semi-windup and a three-quarters release point.  He has above-average arm speed, with a compact, short arm swing and a slight arm stab.  Williams possesses a fairly compact but effort-filled delivery and throws across his body.  Williams also has a noticeable head whack at foot strike, which hinders his command and control of the strike zone.  In fairness, these flaws have improved since last season, but they still exist and damper his overall ability on the mound.

In this start Williams featured a 3-pitch arsenal, consisting of a fastball, curveball and changeup.  His fastball sat 88-90mph, touching 91 three times, with some natural sinking action.  He showed an ability to work inside to both righties and lefties, although his mediocre command left the pitch occasionally in the middle of the plate elevated above the belt.  Williams also had a 78-80mph curveball with 11-5 shape and good depth when thrown well – unfortunately he did not throw many breaking pitches on the evening and was inconsistent on the offerings.  Finally Williams threw a few 78-81mph changeups with good arm speed and some sinking action, although some more resembled batting practice fastballs.  Overall I would put a “45/50” grade on his fastball, a “45” on his curveball and a “40” on his changeup, with below-average to fringe-average command.

Short Hops

Surprisingly Nationals top prospect and Harrisburg starting shortstop SS Wilmer Difo was removed during the 5th inning, with the chatter being he was replaced due to lack of hustle.  While this is mere speculation, if true, this would be the second time this season Difo has replaced mid-game, leading to possible makeup questions if this becomes a trend.  It’s worth noting that Difo started Sunday’s game, likely eliminating injury as the reason for his departure from the game.

Finally on a positive note, CF Rafael Bautista is showing an improved eye at the plate and a real commitment to working deep into counts.  In his five at-bats, Bautista collected two walks and saw 23 total pitches, including an impressive eight pitch walk in the 3rd inning.  Bautista now has 13 walks and a .448 on-base percentage through 51 at-bats this season: including his 9 stolen bases so far, Bautista is obviously embracing his role as a leadoff hitter and offensive igniter in 2016.
