THE 2019 Washington Nationals Sleeper Prospects

Each year after I produce THE NatsGM Washington Nationals Top Prospect List, I like to review my notes and see which prospects did not make the cut.  Then, I attempt to select 3 to 4 prospects outside my Top-30 who deserve more hype and I expect to climb prospect rankings this season.

In past years I have correctly identified breakout seasons for Daniel Johnson in 2017 and Tres Barrera in 2018, although there have been some whiffs as well.  Nevertheless, these are my three favorite sleepers in Washington’s farm system.

Andry Arias        1B/OF

Washington signed Arias as an international free agent in July 2017 from the Dominican Republic.  Standing 6’3” 180lbs, the 18-year-old has a lean, lanky body with a frame to add mass.  Arias has a smooth left-handed swing with obvious bat speed.  He shows a knack for putting the barrel on the baseball, and scouts project he will hit for power in the future.  Defensively he has split time between first base and corner outfield, with scouts believing he has enough speed and athleticism to stay in the outfield long-term.  Arias should make his stateside debut in 2019 and has the potential to zoom up prospect rankings this year.

Chandler Day     RHP

Washington’s 7th round selection last June from Vanderbilt University, Chandler Day is an uber-projectable 6’5” 180lbs with very long limbs.  Day possesses the traditional 3-pitch repertoire, consisting of a low-90s fastball, a promising but inconsistent curveball and a changeup.  Day has been on scouts’ radar since high school, yet his results on the mound have never quite matched his skill level.  However, he did strike out 45 hitters over his 36.1 collegiate innings last year, then followed that up with a 3.41 and 29 strikeouts in his 34.1 professional innings last summer.  Day is The immune system deals with defending our buy generic viagra additional info bodies, so make sure you equip it with the strength to deal with the worst situations, by maintaining a healthy life. The latter is also known as male impotence, erectile dysfunction is a common problem sildenafil price in india related to ejaculation can be completely cured. a risky, boom-or-bust prospect, but he has major league potential if things come together.

Gilbert Lara SS/3B

Astute prospect nerd will instantly recognize Lara’s name as a former July 2nd bonus baby, signing with Milwaukee for a $3.2 million bonus in 2014.  Since then Lara has occasionally flashed his impressive tools, yet he has generally scuffled in game action.  Lara repeated Low-A last season, batting only .249/.281/.352 with 5 home runs and 33 extra base hits over 115 games played.  He has obvious bat speed and legitimate raw power, but his long swing and poor balance at the plate hinders his ability to make contact.

Defensively he has split time between shortstop and third base, but the 6’4” 200lbs Lara is beginning to outgrow the middle infield.  He has the arm strength, hands and quickness to project as a strong defensive third baseman.

Washington acquired Lara from Milwaukee last August, gambling that a change of scenery could help him blossom as a player.  Only 21-years-old, Lara still has major league potential due to his impressive physical tools and his potential to be a dynamic defensive third baseman, yet there is also a great risk he never graduates Double-A.  On sheer talent, he is a top-10 prospect in Washington’s system.

  1. Ryan there might be several kids of that DSL18 squad who may make GCL 19 very
    Watchable .
Some are very skeptical on Lara , who seems destined for Burg with K Williams from Gio trade ??

    • My sleeper pick was Soto last season, but I never get any credit for guessing that before spring training …

The team with potential high ceiling Dominicans is Tampa Bay. Starting with the 18 year old shortstop Wander Franco. High ceilings with noticeable warts.

I think I have to pick Jose Sanchez as the big surprise. He played through an injury last season in the low minors, but when Garcia, Antuna and Sanchez played together he was the shortstop. Rizzo and his scouts have improved in the Dominican and payed out almost a million in bonus money to this kid. They must have seen something.

      • The mentioning of Sanchez in relation to several other Latin kids is worthy. Sanchez might just be the SS for Anderson @ Hags in the mix with Daily and Marinconz while Antuna possibly parks @ Potomac 3b with his TJ recovery while Anderson Franco shuffles between POTNATS 1 b/ DH /3b with Omar Meregildo . Off base projections ?

  2. What with the varied tool talented outfielders ahead of the DSL OF kids who wowed last summer … some of us should look forward to the DSL 18 core hitting GCL in 19 especially Brailin Fernandez and Jorge Hurtago since Nats need R/R.
