Defensively Bautista is a terrific centerfielder who possesses plus “65/70” speed, excellent range and strong instincts for the position.  Bautista is a wiry, lean 6-2 165lbs with obvious athleticism and the potential to add quality muscle as he matures. He has a fringe-average to solid-average throwing arm – These skills combine to make him a natural in center field. He needs additional game experience and should attempt to improve his arm strength but Bautista profiles as a future “60” defender.

Inside the batters’ box Bautista is not nearly as proficient although he shows a knack for making contact, recognizing spin from opposing pitchers and is willing to take a walk. Bautista understands his role, attempting to work the count and get on-base like a leadoff hitter. This right-handed hitter will hit the occasional home run to his pull side, but with “25/30” power, Bautista focuses on putting the ball in play and capitalizing on his speed. His injuries this season make it difficult profiling his future potential, but I could foresee a “45/30” future hitter.

Bautista is an intriguing prospect due to his elite speed, excellent defensive skills and aptitude for making contact. Unfortunately he is a raw prospect and the loss of much of this season due to injuries is development time he will never recapture.

This offseason Bautista must gain strength to keep pitchers’ honest going forward, but his speed and defensive talents point toward a future in the major leagues. If he can add muscle this winter and avoid the disabled list, there is still potential for Bautista to develop into an everyday player in center field. His injuries this season have now made Bautista a sleeper in the farm system and 2016 a critical year in his career development.
