If you can get those terms, we would be crazy not to sign him. Worst case scenario his production numbers drop off for the last two years, though i am not fully on board with the assumption that that will happen. And the fact that he is “way more valuable to an AL team because of the DH” is absolutely true, and that is why there will be an ample market for trading him to the red sox, yankees, rangers, etc in 5 or 6 years if necessary.
PG-
I tend to agree with most of what you said above, though the market to move Fielder in 5 years, assuming he is only limited to DH and that the NL does not adopt the DH in the upcoming years, would be VERY limited unless the team ate plenty of his salary. Besides Ortiz with the Red Sox, teams seem to be shying away from spending big dollars at that position, seeming to prefer a young hitter or allowing some veterans to rotate there. Thanks for reading and for your comment!
Looks like Boras came back and said no to Ted Lerner’s final offer.
Ladson reports:
“There is a “99 percent” chance that the Nationals will not sign free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder, according to a baseball source.
The news comes a few weeks after ownership met with Fielder and his agent, Scott Boras, in the nation’s capital.
The source indicated that Fielder’s price must come down in order for the team to think about acquiring his services. The Nats are not willing to give Fielder anything close to the 10-year, $240 million contract the Angels gave first baseman Albert Pujols.
There is also a concern about the physical condition of Fielder, who is listed at 275 pounds. There are members of the team’s front office who believe Fielder will essentially be a designated hitter within a few years.”
Two things to keep in mind: No-trade clause. Who is willing to do that for Fielder? The Mariners do not have any fall back plan if they don’t sign Fielder … yet its said they have only 2-3 million to spend? Boras is waiting on Texas but they likely won’t. There’s the BluJays. Then the mystery team who I think has to be the Marlins. But will any do a no-trade clause? We know the Marlins definitely won’t. Another possibility would be to return to the Brewers for another year or two. That may end up as his best choice.
Peric, as always, thanks for reading and your participation in the comments.
I agree with your statements above, I think Boras is finding this market much more limited than it should be or he expected, but with the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels squared away at 1B, the Dodgers and Mets in financial troubles, and the Cubs rebuilding, he does not have many big-payroll teams to appeal to. I think Washington or Texas are his best options, but Texas should/will sign Darvish and thus take about $100 million commitment over 5-6 years, making it tough to then add Fielder too. And the Nationals have LaRoche and Morse around to play 1B, certainly a downgrade from Fielder but solid players at a fraction of the price.
I am anxious to see how Boras works his magic and gets Fielder signed. As a fan, I hope it is the Nats that do eventually sign him.
I am curious Peric (and others), do you wish the Nationals to sign Fielder and what would be the maximum contract you would be comfortable with them signing him to, without hindering their future?
I would love to have Prince, of course, but the terms you suggested are almost as far as I would go. I think the contract that will get him, assuming Texas signs Darvish and so doesn’t go crazy, is 7 years, 180M (to top Albert’s AAV), with a 3 year opt out for PF. I would be OK with this as a maximum, as I think it would give PF incentive to make those 3 years great. I think there is a fair chance that it works out to a huge win-win with us getting his best 3 years (and the chance to establish real credibility for the Nats as a contender), PF getting another big payday down the road, and us avoiding those scary back end years. Of course there is a chance that we lose several more great years, or that he flops and we are stuck for all 7, but I think those risks are what it will take to get him.
