Opening Day 2016 Has Arrived!  This is easily the best sports week of the year and the excitement for the beginning of the season got me thinking – What has me fired up for 2016?  So in homage to the 25-man roster and Opening Day, these are the Top-25 Things I Am Most Looking Forward To This Baseball Season!

#25 Jonathan Schoop – My top pick for Breakout Player of 2016, I have watched Schoop for many years and I firmly believe this 24-year-old is in store for a monster season.

#24  David Ortiz’s Final Season – Ortiz has provided several of the most memorable moments in baseball in the past 20 years and I am interested to see how well Ortiz (and the Red Sox) do this year.

#23 Kevin Kiermeier Playing Defense –  According to many defensive metrics Kevin Kiermeier has one of the best defensive seasons ever in 2015.  I love defense, especially outfield defense, and want to see if he is truly a once-in-a-decade type defensive player.

#22 2016 MLB All Star Game – The MLB All-Star Game has it’s flaws but is still a wonderful opportunity to watch the best pitchers face the best hitters in a competitive environment.

#21 Watching Victor Robles – The hype is beginning to reach tsunami levels but scouts speak of Robles like scientists of Big Foot.  His tools and future potential are seemingly limitless and I cannot wait to watch him in Hagerstown.

#20 2016 Chicago Cubs – One of the stronger teams on paper in recent years, can the Cubs handle the overwhelming expectations on them this season?

#19 The MLB Trade Deadline  – Trades are fun!

#18  The Minnesota Twins Hitters Byron Buxton & Miguel Sano – It might be a year early to hype Minnesota’s emerging young talent, but it is difficult to find two more talented hitting prospects in all of baseball.  These two could revitalize the sport in Minnesota.

#17 Clayton Kershaw’s Curveball – It’s amazing!

#16 The MLB Home Run Derby – Home Run Derby’s are fun and MLB has several sluggers like Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Sano and Paul Goldschmidt who could make this a truly epic event.  Book these top hitters and this event could rival the NBA Dunk Contests from the late 80s!

#15 Francisco Lindor – That smile, that swing, those feet and that defense… And I thought Lex Luger was “The Total Package”.

#12 Watching Bartolo Colon Hit – This makes me giggle like a child, but watching Bartolo Colon hit is my baseball guilty pleasure.

#11 Futures Game – Easily the best part of the All-Star Week festivities, the Futures Game gives scouts and hardcore baseball fans the opportunity to see 50 of the top prospects in baseball compete against one another.  It is must-watch television for me each summer!

#10 MLB Draft – This year’s draft class projects as perhaps the strongest crop since 2011 and the Nationals have three picks in the Top-60.

#9 MLB Wild Card Play-In Game – While it is difficult not to feel bad for the team that loses the one game play-in, the beneficiaries are the fans who have seen some terrific contests in the past few years.  Last year’s game between the Cubs and Pirates, with Jake Arrieta and Gerrit Cole on the mound, was outstanding.

#8 Stephen Strasburg’s (Likely) Last Season In DC – Strasburg might have been the best pitcher in baseball the final two months of 2015, and now faces his final season in Washington before reaching free agency.  Strasburg could be poised for the type of dominating season many have anticipated since being drafted #1 overall.

#7 Manny Machado – Machado was born to play baseball and outside of Harper, is easily my favorite current player to watch.

#6 Lucas Giolito’s MLB Debut – This game, which could arrive as soon as May, has the potential to be a poor man’s version of Stephen Strasburg’s debut.

#5 Watching Anthony Rendon Hit – He has the prettiest right-handed swing in baseball and now fully healthy, Rendon could be in store for another big season similar to 2014.

#4 The MLB Postseason – Last year during the postseason we saw Jose Bautista’s epic bat flip and Russell Martin throw a ball back to the pitcher off Shin-Soo Choo’s bat, two of the most unique plays in baseball, occur in the same inning.  Not sure how Major League Baseball tops a Kansas City vs New York Mets World Series this year, but I am anxious for those special October moments.

#3 Bryce Harper – My favorite player to watch, I cannot wait to see how Harper builds off his 2015 MVP season.

#2 Opening Day – Today should be a national holiday and is one of the best days of each year.  The arrival of opening day means we have survived the winter and our best friend “baseball” will be with us each day for the next seven months.

#1 Nationals Home Opening Day – I have attended 9 consecutive home Opening Day’s with my Dad and this year will be #10.  This is easily my favorite day of the year and favorite family tradition.
