Scouting Beer – Steady Eddie by Union Craft Brewing Company

Several weeks ago, while my wife was doing some holiday shopping, she dropped me off at Adult Day Care, better known as a local bar, to pass the time.  As I studied their beer list, I noticed a new beer to their menu, specifically Steady Eddie by Union Craft Brewing Company.  This brew was made in homage to legendary Baltimore Orioles’ slugger and baseball Hall of Famer, Eddie Murray.

With a connection to baseball and because NatsGM.com proudly supports local breweries, I figured I would write an article scouting this beer.  Using a modified version of the 20-80 scouting scale, I held an impromptu beer tasting that afternoon to evaluate this IPA.  Below are my grades and thoughts on this unique ale.

Marketing & Presentation:         NatsGM – 60

The can has the traditional Orioles’ colors of orange and black, with an off-white color for the background.  I would describe it’s appearance as somewhat subdued, with some of Eddie Murray’s greatest accomplishments, surrounding facts about the beer.

In addition, on the side of the can, the beer is described as “…This unique Wheat IPA is an all-star player on your spring and summer roster.  So when you’re in the clutch, call up Steady Eddie.  Always ready.  Always steady”.  While I appreciated the understated nature of the can, much like its namesake Eddie Murray, I do wish it had a picture of Eddie in action or something else to spice it up a bit.

This Indian Pale Ale looks and smells delightful when poured into a proper glass.  It has a beautiful dark orange, almost copper color, and a haziness that makes the beer almost completely opaque.  It possesses a flowery and citrusy scent, with hints of honey and pine.  The beer has a medium-to-large off-white foamy head, where the majority of the aroma originates.

Flavor & Taste:                             NatsGM –       60

This beer has a pleasant, crisp, and almost refreshing flavor.  It has a hoppy flavor to begin, then the honey quickly takes the edge off the Green Bullet, Azacca and Sorachi Ace hops to produce a smooth finish.  I enjoyed how the honey paired with the hops and counterbalanced each other, but for the non-honey fans, it might be a bit much for you.  Despite the 7% ABV and 80 IBUs, this was not an overwhelming IPA, as I found it easy to drink and anticipated much lower numbers.

Overall:                               NatsGM –        65

I greatly enjoyed this delicious, well-made beer by Union Craft Brewing from Baltimore, Maryland.  I would recommend this to my fellow IPA fans, as the honey twist on this style of beer was rare and rather delicious.  The honey flavor would make it difficult to drink several in one sitting, as would the 7% ABV.  But any fan of IPAs or the Baltimore Orioles would appreciate this tasty brew.

The beer is presently out of season, but it comes in a six-pack of 12 ounce cans, and costs approximately $11-12 dollars, making this a solid value for a craft beer of this quality.  Make sure to look for Steady Eddie at your local retailer, and you will certainly be a hit at your fantasy baseball drafts this spring.

Scouting Beer – RAR’s Puck Face

Recently while scouring the beer list at a local pub, Mrs. NatsGM and I stumbled upon an intriguing option with a baseball theme, RAR Puck Face.  I first became aware of this Maryland beer several years ago, due to the obvious nod to the infamous 1989 baseball card of Baltimore Orioles’ legend, Billy Ripken, but had been unable to secure one until now.

With an obvious connection to baseball, and the fact that NatsGM.com proudly supports local breweries, I figured I should revisit a recurring column and scout this beer.  Using a modified version of the 20-80 baseball scouting scale, Mrs. NatsGM and I held a beer tasting to evaluate this sour.  Below are our grades and scouting notes on this five-tool Maryland brew.

Marketing & Presentation           NatsGM – 70      /             Mrs. NatsGM – 75

The beers come as a 4-pack of 16 ounce cans bound together with a simple, black plastic binding.  The can possesses an over-exaggerated cartoon drawing of the Billy Ripken card, with the artist taking some liberties with the original for comedic (and likely legal) reasons.  I have yet to stop belly laughing at the image on the can of a human lime making a sour face with puckered lips.  The plain binding, rather than a vibrant box, keeps it from a double-plus grade for me, but we are both massive fans of the artwork.

This Berliner Weisse style sour looks beautiful when poured into a proper beer glass.  It possesses a natural golden color with a slight peach hue.  It has a slight haze, but is relatively transparent, with a large head of thick, white foam.  There is a strong citrus and lemon smell, combined with a hint of sour lemon-lime.  I personally enjoyed the aroma, but it did not agree with Mrs. NatsGM’s nose.

Flavor & Taste                                 NatsGM – 40       /             Mrs. NatsGM – 30

This light-bodied sour has a unique taste combining several flavors.  It begins with a light wheat taste before the tart, lemon-lime kicks in and that sour flavor increases as it flows down the palate.  It reminded me of a sour and more potent lemon-lime Gatorade.  At 4.6 ABV and zero IBUs, it is a light beer with a crispness that will get you making a sour face after a few sips.

Overall                                               NatsGM – 60       /             Mrs. NatsGM – 40

Mrs. NatsGM and I agree the artwork and presentation of Puck Face is outstanding, and we regard RAR Brewing as one of the elite craft breweries in the region.  While both acknowledging we could not drink more than one due to the strong sour taste, we had a difference of opinion on this beer – she felt it was too sour and could not enjoy “more than a sip or two”, while I had little difficulty finishing my pint.

Puck Face comes in four 16-ounce cans and cost me $21 for the four-pack in a store, so it is not an inexpensive purchase.  Therefore, I would hesitate to recommend it unless the person is a massive baseball fan and greatly enjoys Berliner Weisse style sours.  That said, due to the burgeoning sour beer market and large crossover of beer-drinking baseball fans, I figure there are plenty of people that would enjoy this tasty brew.  If you are looking for a late holiday present, or a fun way to spice up your upcoming fantasy baseball drafts, I highly recommend Puck Face.

Scouting Beer – Strong Arm IPA from Three Heads Brewing

Like an area scout discovering an unknown prospect, recently NatsGM superfan Matt N. spotted Three Heads Brewing’s Strong Arm IPA sitting on the shelves of a New England grocery store and thoughtfully snagged a 4-pack for me to sample.

Due to the obvious baseball theme, plus the fact that NatsGM proudly supports local breweries, I figured we should bring back this recurring column and scout this beer.  Using a modified 20-80 scouting scale, Mrs. NatsGM and I held a beer tasting to properly evaluate this ale.  Below are our grades and a few notes on this delicious IPA.

Marketing & Presentation:         NatsGM  – 65      /             Mrs. NatsGM – 70

The beers come as a 4-pack of 16 ounce cans bound with a plastic binding.  The cans have a witty cartoon drawing of a left-handed pitcher delivering a hop, rather than a ball, toward home plate.  The pitcher is sporting a humorous, Rollie Fingers type mustache, which particularly stands out, along with vibrant colors on the jersey.  The dark background colors and lack of a box keeps it from a double-plus grade for me, but we are both huge fans of the cans’ artwork.

Appearance & Aroma:                  NatsGM  – 65      /             Mrs. NatsGM – 70

Flavor & Taste:                                NatsGM  – 65      /             Mrs. NatsGM – 80

We both greatly enjoyed this IPA, as it has a quality flavor with plenty of hoppiness and a slight lemon citrus flavor.  This is not an overpowering IPA, as it is easy to drink and has a surprisingly mild finish on the palate.  We both described the flavor as crisp without being dry, slightly mild for an IPA and very smooth.  It is on the milder side for a traditional IPA, with only 6% ABV and 60 IBUs.

Overall:                               NatsGM – 65       /             Mrs. NatsGM – 75

Both Mrs. NatsGM and I agree this is a high quality and well-made craft beer offering from Three Heads Brewing based in Rochester, New York.  I would recommend this beer to most any fan of IPAs, but particularly those that prefer a mild, tropical flavor to a stronger hoppy taste.

It comes in four 16 ounce cans and costs approximately $11 per 4-pack, so it is not an inexpensive purchase.  However, considering the unique artwork and superior taste, Strong Arm IPA is a worthwhile purchase and a perfect gift idea for the (over 21-year-old) baseball fan in your life this upcoming holiday season.
