Scouting Wine – Sampling Washington Nationals Cabernet

IMG_5542

Last Saturday evening Mrs. NatsGM and I celebrated my birthday by indulging in a bottle of Washington Nationals Club Series wine, specifically a 2013 Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon.  Because my wife and I use baseball’s 20-80 scouting scale to describe most things and there was an obvious opportunity for a column, we began taste testing this wine like true (phony) wine snobs.

The label is simple and classy, with a sharp looking Nationals’ logo on the bottle.  It is a bit more subdued than the typical bottle in a store, but stands out for the nice curly W.  It cost $14 in the store, plus tax.

Appearance and Aroma

Immediately I noticed how dark the wine was, resembling deep velvet rather than the burgundy color I associate with Cabernet.  The wine had a pleasant, subtle aroma with hints of plum and orange.  And yes, I know this sounds crazy.

The wine did not taste how I expected at first, as it was bold, powerful with a strong fruit-flavor which caught me slightly off-guard.   However, later I had a several bites of cheese (remember, phony wine snob) while drinking and the wine was completely different, with a pleasant, almost light, aftertaste.  I was completely surprised and reminded of the importance to pair food with wine.

Overall

With the understanding I am far from a connoisseur, I was pleasantly surprised by this wine.  Typically when I have tried things in the past due completely to a logo, the results have often been disappointing, like losing an hour of sleep for daylight savings.  But this was light, crisp, and an overall pleasant drinking experience.  I would not hesitate to drink this again and think this could be a nice holiday gift for Nationals’ fans.
