Last week with their first of two 1st round selections, the Washington Nationals picked Georgia high school hitter Carter Kieboom, who according to reports quickly agreed to terms on a contract.  After the pick was announced, I reached out to several smart baseball guys to ask their opinion on Kieboom and what type of prospect the Nationals have added to their organization.  Fortunately a few were willing to share their thoughts on Carter Kieboom.

“I thought Carter Kieboom was the most impressive hitter I saw at the Under Armour Game last summer and one of the best high school bats available in the draft. I think he’ll grow into some more power too, and even if he doesn’t stick at shortstop I think he’ll profile nicely at third base.”Jim Callis, MLB.com & MLBPipeline.com

Carter can really swing it. He caught my eye a year ago at PG national and has kept on raking. He has extremely good actions with his upper half with a Rendon-esque bat tip as he strides. Beyond the good actions everything flows well and he avoids the step by step swing tempo that plagues too many amateur hitters. He even shows the ability to adjust his swing on the fly and get his barrel where it needs to be. As he matures physically and makes swing improvements I’m curious to see how the power develops. Carter barrels line drives all over the field and it wouldn’t surprise me if there is a healthy dose of game power still waiting to be unleashed.” – Ryan Parker, Coach at Collin County Baseball Academy, @RA_Parker

Kieboom is a solid bat speed and approach guy. He has quality hand eye coordination which helps him barrel quality stuff regularly.  Kieboom has a quiet setup but an explosive swing and added strength should help him project for some power.  His actions and reactions defensively are solid and his range should keep him in the infield at third base.  One of the better prep bats for me in this class.” – C.J. Special thank you to Jim, Ryan and C.J. for their terrific contributions to this piece!

  1. Quick fix; the Kiebooms are from Marietta, GA, not South Carolina.

Comments are consistent with scouting reports you read at the normal pundit sites (MLBpipeline, Keith Law, BA). I suspect this was a slight overdraft to enable the Nats to overpay Nuzardo, an opinion supported by his very fast signing. But, still to get him and Dunning and the other guys they got in top 5 is a solid draft.

    • Thanks Todd and I agree with your thoughts. I really like what I saw from Dunning the other night and Luzardo on tape.

  2. Plus bat speed and above average raw power now…that should improve as he adds strength. All of his other tools are above average. He’s hit everywhere he’s been on the circuit. What will be really interesting will be whether he can stay at SS (which the Nats Brain trust firmly believe) or will he have to move to 3B (which every scouting service you read insists will happen). It seems there was late buzz (in last month) on him being good enough to stick at shortstop for at least a few years

He’s a quality pick regardless, granted maybe a slight overdraft as a 3B…(debatable), but If he is able to stay at SS, him falling to # 27 with his hit tool could prove to be a steal.
