  1. I’d be against trading either Norris OR Peacock for Upton. He’ll be another square peg into the round hole of leadoff hitting and will be expensive on name value alone to keep when he hits free agency after next season. Nats would be much smarter to make a move for a real lead-off guy like Denard Span who will be cheaper in both dollars and in what it takes to acquire him.

  2. Do you know something we don’t in regard to Upton? Why just a poll without a column?

    Lester

  3. @Sean, I agree with your assessment about needing a leadoff hitter, though I like Upton’s defense and think it could be a change of scenery/buy-low trade on him right now.

@Lester, I did not write a column about this yet as I do not love writing the “hypothetical trade player X for prospects” type stuff, but I figured this would be about what it would cost to get Upton and I wondered how fans would feel about such a deal.

    Thank you both for writing…

  4. I don’t think anyone will be buying low on Upton. If he were available for the right price (Marrero comes to mind) and would be used correctly (6/7 hitter, great D in CF), I would be all for it…problem is when other teams enter the market, we’ll have to pay a premium price for a non-premium player.

I like little polls like this, though. Good conversation starter.

  5. Can’t hit RH pitching and barely better vs LH starters. Road stats are decent . I say NO

  6. NatsGM,

Like Upton and think he would be a good pickup, but that is too steep a price. Perhaps Robbie Ray and Marrero as someone mentioned might make it worthwhile.

Like these polls too, keep them coming-

  7. I agree with both of Sean’s comments. I would pay this price for Span (also like Bourjos, but this is a little high for him). But this is definitely too high for Upton. I worry that his defense isn’t as strong as it once was. I would take him for a different price (sounds crazy at first blush, but I think Nix and Desi for Upton and Brignac could work), or lesser prospects.

  8. To the group… so it sounds as if none of you think that Upton might still have some upside or some untapped potential to go and could benefit from a change of scenery, as he is only 26 and was a #2 overall selection?

Not the best reasoning to make a deal, but I do not think we have seen the best of either of the Upton’s as of yet.

  9. Upton’s potential is definitely higher than his production, but at this point in almost all players’ careers, they are what they are (or at least close to it). I’d love to buy low on a guy with as much potential as he has, but moving anyone from our top 5 prospects doesn’t really constitute buying low to me.

A Desmond-for-Upton move has been thrown out by a handful of tweeters/bloggers and I might lean more towards something like that. I’m of the opinion that Espinosa is the SS of the future and Lombardozzi or Antonelli could play 2B in the meantime. If the Rays went for it (and given Desmond’s struggles at the plate, there is no guarantee they would), I’d say pull the trigger there.

I think Upton is what he is going to be. He has had over 3000 major league ABs. And most of his years follow his current levels.

He has value, certainly, but as I said earlier, i worry that his defense is slipping, and that is a critical need for this team. With an aging Werth inRF and a young LF to come in Harper, a superior defensive CF would be very important. Compare Upton’s stats to Span – Upton – .256/.341/.412 and Span – .287/.366/.391. Span has higher defensive stats and is trending up there, plus he is under contractual control through 2015. My only disagreement with Sean is that I don’t think he comes more cheaply; the opposite, probably. Unfortunately, I think Desi is the key there too.

I would keep Desi unless I could get a long term CF back. If they trade Desi, I think that they should wait until the offseason before moving Espy, so try to get someone to play SS back in the deal.

  11. GM, just because he was a #2 doesn’t guarantee anything. Go through all the busts at #1 from 1995 to 2005.

  12. @Wally… I did not realize he had 3000+ at bats already. I guess I just think he should put up better numbers than he does, perhaps he is what he is.

@Gonat… Oh I know, just trying to further point out his enormous talents

  13. The last time the Nats got a Rays outfielder it was Elijah Dukes.

First time shame on you , 2nd time shame on me.

Rizzo would be a fool to make the trade. If he did, Eury Perez or Destin Hood + Matt Stairs would be a suitable trade.

  14. Other point on BJ Upton is that he is a 2 year rental then a Free Agent. He will never be a long term piece here so you can’t pay much.

Here is why teams are interested. He is a beast on road games and is horrible in Tampa. Here’s his Road slash lines .291/ .370 /.486/ .856

How much do you pay for him when the better trade would be to pry away Lorenzo Cain from the Royals as he still has 6 years of team control in his future and has better upside and is lethal against LH pitching so he would be a great plattoon player with Roger Bernadina.
